The Doctor’s Orders and Live Nation Present Saul Williams Plus Special Guests 7pm, Monday 20th June 2016 @ Jazz Cafe, 5 Parkway, London NW1 7PG   MartyrLoserKing has just tagged his screen name onto the White House lawn via remote drone. He’s working from a remote e-waste camp in Burundi, Central Africa, neighbouring the more well-known Rwanda, with equipment scrapped together from our old Dell PC towers and Sidekick IIs. Homeland Security, the NSA, and the CIA are tracing his signal back to a place that isn’t on the map or on the grid, and the alert level rises when he hacks NASA just to show he can do it. At least, that’s what Saul Williams will tell you when you ask about his 2015 album and the story it’s inspired. Written and recorded between Senegal, Reunion Island, Paris, Haiti, and New Orleans and New York, Martyr Loser King is a multimedia project that engages the digital dialogue between the 1st and 3rd Worlds, and the global street sounds that yoke the two. “In Senegal, I was buying iPhones for $20, Beats for $10, because they get all the influx from China, with no regulation,” Williams explains. “So everyone’s online. Everyone’s high tech.” He cites Beyoncé, Fredo Santana, and Haitian field recordings as musical inspirations for his self-produced 6th album, straining trap hi-hats and mbira strokes together for a nuanced, entirely original sound. “I’m just letting you know what I’m reading and seeing while I’m writing. When I’m writing, the music leads.” Williams has been breaking ground since his debut album, Amethyst Rock Star, was released in 2001 and executive produced by Rick Rubin. After gaining global fame for his poetry and writings at the turn of the century, Williams has performed in over 30 countries and...

Friday 1st June

ILLA J & special guests 7pm Thursday 30th June 2016 @ Birthdays, 33 Stoke Newington Road, London N16 8BJ Stepping out from the shadow of an older sibling is always hard. When that older sibling is considered by many to be the greatest Hip-Hop producer of all time that can be even harder. Detroit’s own ILLA J has taken the work of older brother, the late great J Dilla, building on it to create a sound uniquely his own while still baring the marks of the family name. Rapper/singer/songwriter Illa J has been navigating his way through the often turbulent waters of Hip-Hop since the tender age of 13, when the he wrote his first rhyme alongside his brother. After his Dilla’s passing in ‘06, he began teaching himself piano, bass and taking vocal lessons while also touring the world and recording a slew of Dilla-related projects, notably as an active member of Slum Village until 2014. His first solo album, 2008s ‘Yancey Boys’ and the Frank Nitt 2013 collaborative album ‘Sunset BLVD’ were both released on seminal label Delicious Vinyl and featured trademark J Dilla beats. Feeling the need for a change he moved to Montreal in 2012 making a connection with Canadian producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical aka Potatohead People (whose acclaimed Bastard Jazz debut album ‘Big Luxury’ featured Illa J on two singles). The success of their initial collaborations inspired the team to dive into the studio and embark on Illa J’s new self-titled solo album and present an entirely fresh sound. Produced without any samples by Potatohead People alongside a groundbreaking co-producers, including Kaytranada, it showcases a more mature and at-ease Illa J who is equally comfortable singing on top of an electronic boogie-inspired beat as he is rhyming over a trunk...

Growing up amidst the sounds of New York hip hop, his father playing Oud, Go-Go, and gospel, Amir took his first steps as an MC producer in the analog basement studio of his legendary neighbor, Garry Shider (Parliament Funkadelic).  Convincing his entrepreneurial father that he too had business acumen, Amir laid the check from his first commercial release on the kitchen table before his 21st birthday and never looked back. Though Oddisee has gone on to perform with The Roots, produce for Freeway, Jazzy Jeff, Little Brother, De La Soul & Nikki Jean, and has MC’d on production from Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Kev Brown, his proudest moment was the birth of his critically acclaimed group Diamond District with fellow Washingtonians X.O. and yU.
