Sunday 7th February 2021 and not only would it have been James ‘J-Dilla’ Yancey’s 47th birthday but also the night of our annual J-Dilla Changed My Life tribute party. Having posted a load of pics from previous events, seen loads of tributes online, re-watched a couple of interviews (and put my son to bed) it was time to ‘Turn It Up’ and listen to Dilla.
I felt inspired and so hit record and threw together this ‘Ruff Mix’ done live in one take. It has a few of my faves, some little known gems, some breaks I have discovered recently alongside some I have known for years and is all a little thrown together for fun – as it often should be.
